Job Description

Are you a compassionate, reliable individual with British Sign Language (BSL) knowlege? Or hold at least a Level 1 in British Sign Language. We are looking for dedicated Support Workers to assist clients who are deaf or hard of hearing.

We are rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Comissions, which shows our excellent reputation for quality, reliability and coordination of care.

Requirements

a) To have basic signing skills or experience

b) Experience working with deaf or hard of hearing individuals is desirable

c) Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills

d) Patience, empathy, and a strong understanding of confidentiality

a) Holds a full driver’s license is preferred due the requirements of travel (domiciliary care)

Purpose

a) To provide a customised, responsive and high- quality service for people who have sensory impairments, learning disabilities and / or additional needs.

b) To empower the person to live as independently as possible with appropriate level of intervention and support.

Key Responsibilities

1. To assist in enhancing existing communication skills by ensuring that constructive and total communication is used at all times, at a level and pace to suit the needs of each client. For persons with sensory impairment – to act as their eyes and ears at all times, relaying what is seen and heard, including spoken contributions, non-verbal and environmental information. This may include indicating who is and who is not present, people’s appearance, facial expressions / body language and what is happening around them.

2. Accompany clients to medical appointments or supporting clients out in the community to social settings.

3. Communicate effectively with clients using BSL

4. To maintain accurate, up to date and comprehensive records regarding your client’s development and general well – being. To ensure that the planning process is relevant and that we are responsive to the changing needs of each client.

5. To attend service review meetings and to be able to contribute when required. To attend regular staff meetings and training.

6. To implement your clients development or care plan, in a manner that is consistent with their culture, age and gender. This may entail arranging and accompanying your client on leisure activities, scheduled appointments, shopping trips etc. You may also be required to escort your client via foot, public transport or if possible via vehicle with the appropriate level of insurance.

7. To work a flexible hours system, including evenings and weekends.

8. To maintain an awareness of good practice, so that a high quality and responsive service can be maintained.

9. To comply with One to One Support Services policies and procedures, whilst actively promoting the principles of equal opportunities and working in a manner that maintains a safe, healthy and supportive environment for staff and service users at all times. Our services work with vulnerable people and it is therefore essential that our staff cooperate fully with all monitoring procedures.

10. When appropriate, to act as a communicator for your client and to assist them with their additional needs in line with their care plan.

11. If stated in the clients care plan you are expected to assist with personal care and when trained to do so assist / prompt with medication.

12. To attend and ensure you keep up to date your own professional development
