Do you have experience supporting students with hearing impairments in higher education?
If so, we’d love to hear from you.

We are seeking dedicated Specialist Support Professionals (Hearing Impairment / Deaf) to join our team on a freelance basis, supporting students across universities nationwide in the UK.

In this role, you will provide tailored academic support outside of lectures, either in person or online (particularly for students in rural areas), helping students understand course content, develop academic skills, and stay on track with their studies.

The Role

As a Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) / Specialist Support Professional – Hearing Impairment (SSP-HI), you will:

  • Provide one-to-one academic support after lectures, helping students review content and clarify key concepts

  • Guide students with:

    • Essay planning and structure

    • Research skills (including library use)

    • Completing coursework and homework

    • Time management, organisation, and academic focus

  • Encourage independent learning and self-advocacy skills

  • Maintain accurate, confidential session records

Please note: This is not an in-lecture role. All support takes place separately, based on individual student needs.


What We’re Looking For

  • A teaching qualification at Level 4 or above (e.g. PGCE, QTS, or equivalent)

  • BSL (British Sign Language) Level 3 or above – essential

  • Experience supporting students with hearing impairments in an educational setting

  • Familiarity with assistive technology and accessibility tools

  • Strong communication, mentoring, and organisational skills


Job Details

  • Freelance position with flexible working hours

  • Typically 1–2 hours per week per student

  • Sessions scheduled at mutually convenient times between you and the student

  • Support delivered:

    • In university libraries or suitable campus spaces

    • Remotely (online), where appropriate

  • Work is within the higher education sector

  • Pay: £25–£35 per hour (depending on experience and qualifications)

  • Start dates: Each academic year, aligned with trimester intakes
