Job Description

Everyday at Deaf ID at Becoming Visible is unique. The type of work and the way we approach our work is unique too. The ethos behind our work is that we ensure that our clients have independence in their everyday lives with integrity. As a trusted and valued part of the team, you will be integral to this approach in working with Deaf ID and our clients.

 This service works with Deaf people of all backgrounds and ages (from 8 upwards). We are looking for staff who are a people’s person, who have a flexible approach to working hours, can work in a support worker or personal assistant roles as well as a Buddy (with specific aims). As an example, you will be expected to do the following tasks with clients: 

  • Shopping 
  • Eating healthily (shopping, cooking and discussions) 
  • Managing money 
  • Paying bills 
  • Ensuring your client understands information 
  • Accompanying them to appointments 
  • Work with them to develop life skills such as travel, socialising, visiting groups and venues 
  • Face to face support with individuals to provide support and companionship 
  • Introducing them to and building up new interests 
  • Record keeping
  • Contributing to client review meetings

 Your skills and experience:

  • Staff with varied skills, interests, experience, knowledge in a variety of subject areas
  • You will need the ability to step back and allow your client to take the lead or encourage them to.
  • You will be be matched to clients requests and expectations and therefore we are looking for staff aged 18 upwards.

What you need to have:

  • Have British Sign Language
  • Personal or working knowledge of Deaf Culture
  • Commitment to achieve qualifications within 3 months of starting with us and ongoing training
  • Practise and commit to a person-centered approach of working
  • Ability to travel independently
  • Patient and kind
  • Good communicator
  • Enjoy working with people
