Job Description
Full-time (37 hours/week) – part-time hours considered
We’re looking for a versatile BSL Interpreter to work in a range of settings (including healthcare, social care, employment, legal, education and community settings), supporting Deaf BSL users to communicate confidently and access services. This is a rewarding role for someone who is professional, people-focused and committed to high-quality accessible communication.
Salary: £28,000 – £36,000 per year (subject to experience/pro rata for part-time)
Hours: 37 hours per week (full-time), including some evenings and weekends. Part-time hours will be considered.
Office base: Sandwell Deaf Community Association, West Bromwich, West Midlands
Purpose of the role
To provide British Sign Language Interpreting in a variety of environments.
Essential:
- Signature Level 6 NVQ certificate in British Sign Language (or equivalent) as appropriate.
- Signature Level 6 NVQ diploma in Sign Language Interpreting (or equivalent) as appropriate.
- NRCPD registered.
- Experience of working with people with hearing loss and an understanding of the barriers to community participation that face them.
- Competency interpreting BSL/English and English/BSL.
- Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the cultural identity and linguistic needs of D/deaf people.
- Established competence to think quickly and maintain intense concentration.
- Precise and rapid BSL skills.
- Evidence of effective IT skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and part of a team.
- Ability to work with a variety of people and network effectively with colleagues in other agencies/services.
- Ability to understand and implement SDCA policies.
- Commitment to promoting rights of D/deaf people.
- Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
- Flexibility with working hours as occasional weekend and evening work is required.
- Ensure safeguarding responsibilities are upheld at all times, in line with organisational and local safeguarding procedures.
- Demonstrated experience working safely and effectively with adults at risk.
Desirable:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience of working in the field of BSL/English Interpreting
- Working in the voluntary sector

- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally.
- Display a commitment to continued professional development.
- Present an energetic commitment to the mission and objectives of SDCA.
- Competence to use initiative but also work under direction.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, including confidence when speaking in public.
